Problem Based Learning Method

Green Gems International School applies Problem Based Learning Method from Grade 6 to 10.

Problem-Based Learning is a teaching method in which complex real-world problems are used as the vehicle to promote our student learning of concepts and principles as opposed to direct presentation of facts and concepts. Problem-based learning is a student-centered pedagogy in which our students learn about a subject through the experience of solving an open-ended problem found in trigger material.

By this learning our students can- Explore the issues, State what is known, Define the issues, Research the knowledge, Investigate solutions, Present and support the chosen solution, Review the performance.

The advantages of problem-based learning encourages higher order critical thinking and de-emphasizes memorization. Increases motivation to learn in order to arrive at a solution. Provides additional opportunities for students to work collaboratively and practice communication and social skills.

The characteristics of problem based learning is driven by challenging, open-ended problems with no one “right” answer. Problems/cases are context specific. Students work as self-directed, active investigators and problem-solvers in small collaborative groups.

The Process of Problem Based Learning is students can – Present their Problem, can define the problem and brainstorm ideas based on prior knowledge, engage in independent study, share information, engage in peer teaching and work toward a solution, students can present their solution and review what they have learned, students engage in self, peer and tutor review of the process.
